The Massachusetts maximum security prison where Aaron Hernandez apparently hanged himself has seen its share of troubles since it opened almost two decades ago. Two years later, Hernandez was unable to even watch his former team play on television while he was in prison awaiting trial in one shooting and already a suspect in another.

His lawyer Jose Baez believes that Hernandez was optimistic that he would have his previous murder conviction for the 2013 fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd, in which he was serving life without the possibility of parole, overturned. A team spokesman said that trip would proceed and declined to comment further on Hernandez's death. He said that officials had no concern that Hernandez might take his own life, and said if they had had any such worries he would have been transferred to a mental health unit. The 27-year-old was housed in the general population unit of the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley.

Christopher Fallon, a spokesman for the correction department, told the Boston Globe that investigators had not found a suicide note and that Hernandez had not previously been considered at risk of harming himself.
