The protest began Tuesday and was led by Marwan Barghouti, imprisoned since 2002.

ISRAELI officials opted for repression yesterday in the face of a hunger strike by more than 1,100 Palestinian prisoners, rejecting dialogue and putting leading activist Marwan Barghouti into solitary confinement.

In response, Israel's Minister for Intelligence and Transportation tweeted that Barghouti should have been executed right after his 2004 conviction for five murders as part of the 2 Palestinian Intifada.

Opinion polls suggest Barghouti, who is serving multiple life terms for his role in a violent Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, is the top contender to succeed Mr Abbas.

Israeli Public Security Minister, Gilad Erdan, said he will not hold any dialogue with the Palestinian prisoners regarding their demands.

"Israel is trying to de-incentivize future hunger strikes and is trying to basically embrace the "no concession" policy... they are taking deterrent measures", Zalzberg said.

In the West Bank town of Ramallah, Barghouti's wife, Fadwa, joined about 1,500 marchers.

During the month, supporters of justice and liberation for Palestine all over the world organize events and activities to stand in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners of freedom. "Some have been killed while in detention", he wrote. Benjamin Netanyahu is said to be fully willing to wait the situation out, whether it results in the prisoners changing their mind or dying the hard way.

Hundreds of Palestinians rally demanding the release of the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Barghouti's wife Fadwa told AFP at a demonstration in Ramallah that prisoners' demands were in line with "international law and recognized as part of human rights". They were five counts of murder and membership in a terrorist organization. Building new settlements in the occupied territories is considered a violation of global law.

Furthermore, the Palestinian Detainees' Committee and the Palestinian Prisoner Society have reported that the prison authority in Galboa' Israeli prison has prevented the lawyers from visiting with hunger striking detainees.

Among the prisoners' chief demands is the installation of telephones in each prison, more frequent family visits, better healthcare and improved conditions for female prisoners.

Similar protests were held throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Palestinians consider brethren held in Israeli jails as national heroes. The objective of the strike is ostensibly to protest prison conditions, to receive more visitation time with family and to end detention without trial, but a number of observers see the effort as part of a Barghouti run for PA leadership.
