Nintendo Sold More Zelda Switch Copies Than Switch Consoles

The previous record was set by the GameCube, which sold over 660,000 units in the U.S. during the first month it was released in November 2001.

Both consoles have been criticized for their launch lineups - either for the lackluster number of games offered on the Switch or the lack of a first-party system seller on the Wii U - but the Switch certainly benefitted from one monster game.

This makes the new Zelda game the fastest-selling Nintendo launch title in its 30-year history.

A research firm, the NPD Group, tracks the United States gaming industry suggested that the game company sold more of its popular games for the Switch than the units of hardware itself.

For comparison, Nintendo revealed the Wii U sold 400,000 consoles during its first week on sale in 2012, while the Wii sold 600,000 units in its first eight days on sale.

Nintendo Co. shares jumped as much as 4 percent after the company said its new Switch console is off to a record-setting pace in the USA since its March 3 debut.

The Nintendo Switch games sell for $59.99 like the games for the PS4 and Xbox One. That problem will only be exacerbated when games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, and Splatoon 2 debut in the coming months. The Nintendo Switch with Gray Joy-Con Digital Starter Bundle ships on April 28. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo's internal sales figures.

In March, the company sold more than 906,000 units in the United States alone. A greater-than-100% attach rate is no joke.

Both the Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild broke internal sales records during their release month this past March.

Even though sales have been off to a fast start, Nintendo hasn't been able to keep up with demand for the console. The rendering of the game on the Nintendo Switch is astounding, with sharp and bright screens with powerful stereo speakers. It will probably result in a mass following, similar to the Sony PS Vita and might very well become one of the must have consoles for 2017 and even beyond.
