Russia and Iran have accused the US of crossing "red lines" in ordering the airstrike, and the Russian embassy in the United Kingdom said attempts to push for sanctions could lead to a "real war".

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said Syria's "sponsors", Russian Federation and Iran, were enabling President Bashar al-Assad's "campaign of mass murder against his own civilians".

He also said that Russian Federation should not be "pushed into a corner" over Syria, but that it should put pressure on Assad to stop the use of chemical weapons, and should join the global push for peace in Syria. It is a start but we know that after this visit, Russian Federation is not going to declare it has severed its ties with the Assad regime.

The Trump administration appears divided on whether the U.S.is pursuing a policy of regime change in Syria, days after the first direct American military attack against the Syrian government. "You know, we've seen what violent regime change looks like in Libya and the kind of chaos that can be unleashed". "We're not going to have you cover for this regime anymore, '" Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations said in a TV program.

Pressed to clarify, McMaster said the goals of fighting IS and ousting Syria's president were somewhat "simultaneous" and that the objective of the missile strike was to send a "strong political message to Assad" to stop using chemical weapons. "We're not going to have you cover for this regime anymore", she said.

"We haven't had one for six years during the Obama administration, and 400,000 civilians have died and millions of people have been displaced internally and externally in Europe and elsewhere".

"A one-time deal is not going to be productive".

Russell Westbrook's record 42nd triple-double knocks Nuggets from playoff race
With the crowd again on its feet anticipating history, Westbrook passed to Domatas Sabonis, whose jumper rimmed out at 7:16. The Hall of Famer said Westbrook's triple-double numbers show his overall impact on the game beyond his team's record.

Tillerson, on the other hand, stressed that the air strike had the limited aim of deterring further use of chemical weapons. He suggested on the campaign trail that Assad was an unsavory but stable ruler, and that the US should not focus on pushing him out of power.

Ms Bishop said the attack on the base from which the chemical weapons attack took place was a "proportionate, calibrated and targeted".

The US and United Kingdom have blamed Russian Federation for being complicit in the deaths of civilians in last week's alleged chemical attack and Moscow could face fresh worldwide sanctions over its support for the dictator.

"What the Americans did is a strategic mistake and offense".

Elsewhere in the Middle East, a Syrian Sukhoi jet took off from the Shayrat airbase targeted by the volley of US strikes, Hezbollah's al-Manar TV channel reported Sunday, saying repairs to the base began within hours of the attack.

Moscow also slammed Britain after Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson canceled on April 9 a trip over Russian support for al-Assad. But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use by the government since then. "We are also keen to continue efforts to build on the cease-fire within the scope of the Astana [Kazakhstan] talks", he told journalists in a meeting organized by the Directorate General of Press and Information in the Mediterranean city of Antalya.
