Obama's abrupt decision not to fire missiles and instead work with Russian Federation to remove Assad's chemical weapons infuriated many Republicans who had backed the Democratic president's proposal.

In a post about the recent chemical weapons attack in Syria, PolitiFact admitted, "The outcry leads us to revisit a 2014 claim from former Secretary of State John Kerry". He did not respond to shouted questions about the assault from reporters as he opened meetings with Xi on Friday.

The comments represented a departure from what she had said before the USA attacked a Syrian air base with 59 Tomahawk missiles on Thursday. The US missiles hit at 20:45 in Washington, 03:45 on Friday morning in Syria.

The missiles targeted the base's airstrips, hangars, control tower and ammunition areas, officials said.

Turkey, a key backer of the Syrian opposition, has thrown its weight behind a stuttering peace process in the Kazakh capital, Astana, which it hopes will pave a way for a political solution to Syria's devastating war.

It stressed that the incident was due to an air attack that battered a terrorist-operated chemical weapons factory. France, Italy and Israel also welcomed the strikes.

Chinese President Xi undoubtedly understood the threat involved in the USA strikes in Syria.

"I think all Americans and all our allies in the free world should take great comfort in what occurred with that strike last night", he said.

Democrats were muted in their response. Almost 60 Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired at a Syrian air base in the attack. As Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was making the Trump administration's first official trip this week to Russia, McMaster said Russia will have to decide whether it wanted to continue backing a "murderous regime". Some of them said that the air strike happened around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

"The real test for Mr. Trump is what comes next".

The Chinese response to the U.S. military action has been decidedly muted.

On Capitol Hill many lawmakers described the attacks as long overdue and a necessary exercise of American leadership on the world stage, even as many Democrats warned that President Trump will need to seek their approval if he strikes Assad again or seeks to escalate American involvement in the war.

But as lawmakers called on Trump to consult with Congress, Trump administration officials sent mixed signals on the scope of future US involvement.

But there could be other problems. Assad accused the U.S. of trying to boost the morale of "terror groups" in Syria.

Assad's office said the government would re double its efforts against rebel groups after the USA strike - the first direct military action by Washington against the Damascus regime. The goal was to avoid any accident involving Russian forces.

Russia's deputy ambassador to the UN, Vladimir Safronkov, described the U.S. strikes as "illegitimate".

"First and foremost, we must defeat ISIS", Tillerson said on CBS's "Face the Nation", using an acronym for Islamic State. They unanimously condemned the attack as violation of the global rules and of borders of a sovereign nation.

The US also notified its partner countries in the region prior to launching the strikes.

Standing firm, the Trump administration on Friday signaled new sanctions would soon follow the missile attack, and the Pentagon was even probing whether Russian Federation itself was involved in the chemical weapons assault that compelled President Donald Trump to action. Obama had declared the use of such weapons a "red line".

The British have "no real influence", Russia's foreign ministry said. "It is in our vital national security interest to prevent the spread and use of chemical weapons", the BBC quoted Haley.

He stressed that whether the attack is chemical or not, almost 1 million victims have been killed in Syria, and that the world should act against all kind of civilian casualties, regardless of how they were killed.
