Nangarhar provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani gave a death toll of 90, far higher than the initial toll of 36 dead ISIS fighters given by Afghan officials.
But some analysts called the action "disproportionate" and said the use of the bomb was likely a technical decision of matching the most effective ordnance to a specific target - tunnels and caves in an unpopulated area.
The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan says that the decision to deploy one of the largest conventional bombs ever used in combat was purely tactical, and made as part of the campaign against Islamic State-linked fighters.
Villagers who live in the vicinity to where the "mother of all bombs" was dropped in Afghanistan on Thursday believed the "end of the world" was near after the bomb was dropped.
But ISIS later released a counter-statement denying that any of its militants were killed or injured in the blast attack.
He continued, "It was the right time to use it tactically against the right target on the battlefield".
While the attack was supported by the Afghan government, former president Hamid Karzai said it represented an "inhuman and most brutal misuse of our country as testing ground for new and risky weapons".
Trump described the Afghanistan bombing as "another very, very successful mission".

The United States has acknowledged it may have had some kind of role in the incident but also said Islamic State may be to blame. The incident renewed concern about civilian deaths in the wake of the US-led air campaign against ISIS.
But former President Hamid Karzai accused the United States of using Afghanistan as "a testing ground for new and unsafe weapons".
A U.S. official who monitored the recent attack which saw one of the biggest conventional bombs ever to be used in combat - said it was impossible to determine how many fighters might be buried underground.
One resident living around 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the blast told CNN he heard an "extremely loud boom that smashed the windows of our house". "We thought it had happened right in front of our house", he said.
But reports say fighting has intensified in recent days.

Hamza Abobakr; Hamid; Mohammad Abrani and Walkin, Hafiz Saeed's brother, were reportedly among the dead Daesh militants killed in the bombing.
The MOAB weapon used on Thursday is a GPS-guided weapon that was first tested in 2003 and has not been used in combat since them.
