The former Patriots tight end is accused of fatally shooting two men in 2012 after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him at a Boston nightclub.

Hernandez was also acquitted Friday of shooting Bradley in the face a few months later in an attempt to try and silence him as a witness.

Hernandez was convicted on a single charge of illegal possession of a firearm. The families of both Abreu and Furtado were in the courtroom when the verdict was read. An attorney for Hernandez says the 27-year-old is "relieved" about the verdict.

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez cries after being acquitted of first-degree double murder on Friday. Hernandez is now serving life without parole for murdering an acquaintance in 2013. Prosecutors said Hernandez opened fire on their vehicle because he felt disrespected when one of the men bumped into him and spilled his drink at a Boston nightclub.

The acquittal of Aaron Hernandez is the latest big win for attorney Jose Baez, who has made a career of high-profile defenses. "That's ridiculous", Conley said.

The latter captained the side with Wayne Rooney again absent from the squad, along with forward Anthony Martial. The severity of his injury should become clear in the coming days. "I hope only this game (he misses)".

Hernandez's trial lasted five weeks and jury members deliberated for six days before delivering the not guilty verdicts. If those decisions had gone the other way, Hernandez may have had grounds to appeal for a mistrial.

More than a year passed before he was charged with the double-murder, which prosecution witnesses said was the result of his paranoid temperament, which led him to constantly suspect people were disrespecting and challenging him.

The eyewitness testimony of Alexander Bradley, also a convicted felon and drug dealer, was the basis for the case against Mr Hernandez. He calls Hernandez "a handsome young man". Hernandez told Bradley to roll down the SUV's windows and run a red light so they could pull up next to them. "What's up now, n*****?"

He said Hernandez later opened fire on the men's vehicle as they waited at a stoplight. Two immigrants from Cape Verde, Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, were killed.
