Zuma, Qatar's Emir hold talks in Pretoria

South African President Jacob Zuma is meeting Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Bin Al Thani in the capital, Pretoria, on Tuesday night, a day before opposition parties are due to march on his offices to demand he step down.

The Qatar leader His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani travelled with a strong contingent of business leaders to share with their Kenyan counterparts.

Through the cultural agreement, Kenya and Qatar will cooperate in the promotion of, and participation in, each other's cultural arts and activities, PSCU added.

Among the agreements that were signed include in Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research and Cultural Cooperation.

In comments passed to the media, Kenyatta said his nation appreciated Qatari help in developing infrastructure, education, energy, tourism and hospitality projects and called for greater cooperation in the aviation sector.

Relations between the two countries date back to 1994 after South Africa was liberated from Apartheid segregation system.

" Ethiopia's strategic role in Africa and the value Qatar attached to the country is the reason to my first visit in African soil, " the Emir noted.

He said the agreements will facilitate implementation of projects in various sectors.

President Kenyatta also thanked the government of Qatar for the support it gave to the National Treasury of Kenya to establish the Nairobi International Finance Center (NIFC).

The Kenyan appreciation has emerged for the Qatari role in peace and development on more than one occasion, including Qatar's presidency of the 13th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XIII), now chaired by Kenya at its 14th session, and was emphasised by Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and President of UNCTAD Amina Mohammed.

Economic Empowerment is a project implemented by Qatar Charity in the northeast of Kenya to help the residents of that area to cope with the severe drought that hit the region, leaving very hard economic effects on the people who lost their livestock, which is their only source of livelihood.

Zuma and Al Thani will continue talks on Wednesday. "Terrorism is a global problem that requires the world to come together to provide a solution", he said.
