University of Phoenix ending Cardinals stadium sponsorship

Soon, the venue will have a new name.

The decision to end the partnership comes nine years before the University of Phoenix's contract to have its name on the stadium is set to end, as the original deal the two sides struck was supposed to last through 2026. The $154.5 million deal paid the Cardinals an average of $7.7 million per year.

The group that runs the university, Apollo Education Group, has run into some financial troubles recently.

Team officials announced Tuesday that the Cardinals are looking for a new naming-rights partner.

The Cardinals and the University were only seven seasons into their deal, so this could be a nice boost to the team financially.

Also, some state and local laws have prohibitions on when immigrants can be transferred to the agents for deportation. One immigration rights advocate said the pullback points out the flaws in the new get-tough policy.

Until a new naming rights partner is found, the football stadium will remain as University of Phoenix Stadium.

"We look forward to continuing our relationship with University of Phoenix while at the same time are excited about identifying a new naming rights partner for the next era of the stadium's success", Cardinals executive vice president/chief operating officer Ron Minegar said in a statement.

"We have determined it's best to evolve our partnership and shift away from stadium naming rights going forward", Blackwood said.

Also, it will be nice not to see the stadium named after a college that is the butt of many a jokes. They've been laying off workers and enrollment continues to drop.
