Several students were hospitalized after a crash involving a Sarasota, Fla., school bus this morning, but all are expected to recover. Rans made an improper left turn, colliding with the bus.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital was ready just in case. The students aboard the bus were from a school for students with special needs. The driver of the red vehicle was also taken to the hospital. The front of the vehicle hit the right front of the bus.

The injuries "were mostly bumps and bruises", said Gary Leatherman, communications director for the Sarasota School District. One student was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition.

The driver of the auto, 69-year-old Michael Rans of IN, was taken to SMH with serious injuries.

"We are very, very thankful that injuries to the students were not more serious".

The suspects were in and out of the gun store within 30 seconds, indicating that this was a planned event. "We don't know that". As the driver backs out, three men wearing hoodies and masks dash in.

The bus has seat belts, but Ferguson could not say definitively whether the students were wearing them.

Rans was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. That caused the bus to lose control and slam into a power pole.

Neighbors and witnesses worked to comfort those students not needing medical attention.

Until a traffic light damaged in the accident is fixed, the intersection of Proctor Road and Gantt Road should be treated as a 4-way stop, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

Ferguson did not say when the Dunns would return to the job, but he said they might be evaluated for additional training, although he added that it is "pretty clear they are not at fault".
