New Zealand stunned defending champions and arch-rivals Australia with a 52-51 victory to win the Netball World Cup for the first time in 16 years in Liverpool.

Taurua, who has led Sunshine Coast Lightning to two successive Super Netball titles, took over the post 11 months ago following that disastrous campaign on the Gold Coast and turned the team into world champions.

Australian netballers Jo Weston, left, and Kelsey Browne can not hide their disappointment after a one-point Netball World Cup final defeat to New Zealand in Liverpool.

Some days are Diamonds, some days are stones.

Taurua, missed out on the Silver Ferns job in 2011 to Wai Taumaunu and then again in 2015 to Janine Southby.

"Here they were supposed to have the edge, having won four of the past five World Cup finals between this pair".

"I can't put into words what just happened", New Zealand attacker Maria Folau, a constant thorn in England's side, said.

The Australians, meanwhile, were continuing to find their shooters with comparative ease, and Thwaites and Tippett weren't wasting any opportunities which came their way.

"They are young women who wanted to show the netball world, especially in Australia, that they are the real deal. So they are hurting right now".

However, the Silver Ferns fought their way through the final match, claiming victory in the last minutes of the game.

Alexander said the disappointment of defeat was different to the sinking feeling she felt when England stole the gold medal match previous year with a last-second goal to stun the red-hot favourites.

"The team has layers of depth and it is great to see some of the longer serving players to be able to take home the cup".

England have the chance to end their tournament on a high in the bronze medal match against South Africa.

Management installed Noeline Taurua, herself a former Silver Fern, as coach, but controversially just hired her on a part-time basis. "It was pretty tough out there - their shooting circle and their defensive line were really impressive today, so although we weren't as happy as we could have been with the second half, we had enough lead from our solid first-half performance to hold them out".

Australia had rested players for the semifinal, and Muir said that may have come back to hurt them.

Pretorius was honoured during the medal ceremony in front of a pact M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool un Sunday after the Australia-New Zealand final. "We didn't get caught chasing".
