Johansson's has played Black Widow, a major role in seven Marvel movies, tracking her evolution from morally dubious Russian assassin to a world-saving Avenger. The character's first standalone movie releases on May 1, 2020, and is being directed by Cate Shortland.

Fans were then treated to a short clip from the film, and what it reveals hints at the larger story of Black Widow.

The Black Widow movie will delve into Romanoff's past, watching as she puts the pieces of herself back together to make her a whole person, with Budapest serving as a significant setting.

The Australian director previously helmed films like Lore and Berlin Syndrome that caught Marvel and Johansson's attention, as they met with a number of directors to find the right fit for the long-awaited Black Widow movie.

Black Panther 2, Fantastic Four, Captain Marvel 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 have been officially confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019. We've only seen glimpses of Natasha's past in the MCU, with her connection to fellow SHIELD agent Clint Barton teased in Avengers, her time in the Red Room revealed in Avengers Age of Ultron, and her parentage teased in Avengers Endgame.

Filmmakers brought an intense sizzle reel of on-location shots, kicked off by a dazzling and bone-crushing fight sequence between lead Scarlett Johansson and her on-screen sister Florence Pugh.

Jolie and Hayek will front ensemble film "The Eternals" in November 2020, which will feature the franchise's first deaf superhero. Natasha inches toward her target until they're standing gun-to-gun.

Despite already filming for the past month, Black Widow was formally announced during SDCC with a release date and cast info. If we're lucky, we may even see Nick Fury and Hawkeye as well.
