His administration is grappling with a surge of Central American migrants trying to enter the US, and Trump said last week he'd seal the border in the coming days if Mexico did not immediately halt all illegal immigration into the U.S.
The call comes as other White House officials attempt to warn Trump about the consequences of shutting down the border.
DHS says that besides getting Mexico to block the transit of migrant caravans to the border, Congress should take immediate action to give border officials the power to forcibly repatriate Central American illegal immigrants, including children who arrived alone, back to their countries.
'We're hoping that Mexico will continue to step up like we've seen them them do over the last couple of weeks we hope that continues, and we can work with them so that we don't have to do that, ' Sanders said.
"The Border Patrol agent said it's going to get worse", Amaya said.
She added that the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador does not intend to militarize the country's southern border in an attempt to deter Central American migrants.
White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in an appearance on MSNBC that the White House is now considering a number of options short of a full border closure, such as shutting down certain entry ports or parts of all of them.
Sanders also said Mexico must ramp up its efforts to curb illegal immigration into the U.S.

It has not been made clear when Trump plans to put a closure into effect. 'We've already had to move roughly 750 personnel from ports of entry'.
He says Congress needs to address the shortage of immigration judges in border regions, which could help process asylum claims more efficiently.
