
Iraq Says ISIS Blew Up Mosul's Historic Great Mosque Of Al-Nuri
The army recaptured eastern Mosul in January and is now fighting to retake control of the western part of the city. The mosque has dominated Mosul's skyline for centuries and is pictured on Iraq's 10,000 dinar bank note. The militant group flew its black flag from the famous minaret and the building became the centre of IS activities. IS has demolished dozens of historic and archaeological sites in and around Mosul , saying they promoted idolatry.
