Republican wins pricey $79m Georgia race

Though Ossoff and Handel both said the race was about them, pols and pundits elsewhere made them proxies in a national battle. "Nancy Pelosi is not the only reason that [Jon] Ossoff lost [in Georgia], but she certainly is one of the reasons".

Spending on the race reached at least US$57 million (S$79 million), almost twice the last record, said the Centre for Responsive Politics, a watchdog. It, if you think about it, is one of the only games in town.

The Congressional Leadership fund raised $6.2 million alone for Handel - about a third of the $18 million Handel's campaign raised from outside political groups. Gergen's analyses did not include the California race because there was only nominal Republican opposition in the heavily Democratic district and the victor was chosen by run-off. "It was not about national issues particularly, other than, when you think about national security, but not national politics".

The race was the most expensive House race in American history.

"I said on April 18th, primary night, that for Republicans it needed to be all hands on deck, from the foot soldiers on the ground, all the way up to the Vice President and the President", said Handel.

Despite Tuesday's losses in Georgia's 6th District and South Carolina's 5th, Pelosi can resist the pressure to give up her position during the current congressional term.

But Lyles' family have criticized officers' decision to use deadly force, as opposed to less-lethal options like a taser. Lyles' brother, Michael Taylor, spoke to them: "This is my family and we're going to be as one", said Taylor.

KAREN BASS: In the districts where we are truly competitive, I don't think that message is going to hold very much. "But I am honored by the support". And I will work just as hard to earn your confidence in the weeks and months ahead'.

With Jon Ossoff's loss to Karen Handel for the U.S. House seat vacated by HHS Secretary Tom Price in Georgia's 6 District Tuesday night, Democrats have been winless in their effort to punch a hole in President Donald Trump's shining armor.

President Trump had endorsed Handel and after her victory congratulated her, saying she had done a "fantastic job".

Democrats came close but still lost two other contested special elections earlier this year for Republican-held seats in conservative Kansas and Montana, and the outcomes in Georgia and SC could put a crimp in the party's fundraising and candidate recruitment.

Even though Trump won the reliably red state in the 2016 presidential election, he did so by just 1 percent, as opposed to former Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who claimed the state with a 26-point lead. "All the Fake News, all the money spent = 0", he tweeted, apparently believing that there had been a fifth race.
