Mysterious vaping lung illness linked to marijuana products

Officials believe this could be the first death related to e-cigarettes in Oregon.

The Star Tribune reported Tuesday that health officials have interviewed eight of 15 patients in Minnesota who have been hospitalized for severe respiratory illnesses with confirmed links to vaping.

State and federal health authorities have said they are focusing on the role of contaminants or counterfeit substances as a likely cause of vaping-related lung illnesses.

In Wisconsin, health officials said Thursday that a majority of the cases in their state had inhaled THC products. "THC or other illegal drugs are responsible for these illnesses, not nicotine vaping products". Other reported symptoms include fever, chest pain, weight loss, nausea and diarrhea.

Laboratory tests conducted at the New York Department of Health's Wadsworth Center in Albany showed "very high levels" of vitamin E acetate in the cannabis-containing samples, the state health department announced. The CDC also failed to determine if these teen users were using nicotine-free vape liquid....which means they wouldn't be vulnerable to the addictive qualities of nicotine. The CDC does emphasize they haven't determined a cause but one thing all the cases have in common is the patient vaped, or used an e-cigarette. The oil derived from the vitamin, known as vitamin E acetate, is commonly available as a nutritional supplement and is used in topical skin treatments.

One is a 2018 BMJ case report of a 34-year-old British woman who'd been vaping for three years when she developed lipoid pneumonia and respiratory failure, while another from 2012 details how a 42 year old woman was seen multiple times and prescribed "several courses of antibiotics" before doctors finally told her to stop using e-cigarettes.

There are no cases of vaping-associated lung disease in Canada, but a national team is monitoring for problems.

"Vaping of unknown substances is risky, and we continue to explore all options to combat this public health issue".

"I think there's an emerging consensus that the immune cells of the lung are a little bit upset by vaping", he said.

Mark Pettinger, a spokesman for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, which regulates marijuana sales in the state, said the agency is prepared to issue a recall of any product deemed unsafe.
