Barr, the top US law enforcement official, vowed to carry on the case against anyone who was complicit with Epstein.

The lawmakers said they did not want to wait for the outcome of the Justice Department investigations before receiving their own information. British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is one of four women accused of recruiting underage girls for sex.

The Associated Press reported that prison guards were working overtime due to major staff shortages at the facility and that Epstein had been left without a cellmate, which was against protocol. In a previous incident in July, guards found him unconscious on the floor of his cell with marks on his neck.

Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning.

Barr also issued a stern warning for anyone who may be evading justice: "Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein".

As to why there was no replacement in accordance with policy, the official said, "We don't know yet".

More details about exactly how Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in jail are just raising more questions about how such an important prisoner was allowed the opportunity to kill himself. Any co-conspirators should not rest easy.

Congress is the latest to start investigating Epstein's apparent suicide, with new reports raising questions about the federal jail where he was being held.

French Secretary of State for Gender Equality Marlene Schiappa and Secretary of State for Child Protection Adrien Taquet ordered the investigation.
