The tech giant hasn't necessarily had the strongest track record when building social networks (Orkut, Google Buzz, and Google+ are all defunct), but with Shoelace, the intentions, at least, seem promising. It's only available in NY right now, but the ultimate goal is to expand to cities across the United States, though that could take some time.
Then, each day you'll see nearby events - which Shoelace thematically calls "Loops" - that match those interests you've selected. Basically, if you are new in town, for instance, you could use the app to find more people with the same interest as yours, maybe someone to go to the gym with, or someone who likes swimming. It works by letting you create events or activities and invite friends and strangers to join you.
Shoelace was born out of Area 120, Google's workshop for experimental products. Shoelace is basically a social networking platform that will help people get together offline.
At least 35 injured from turbulence on Air Canada flight
A woman behind her hit the ceiling so hard that she broke the casing of an oxygen mask, said Beam, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Air Canada was arranging hotels and food for passengers in Honolulu and looking at resuming the flight, the statement said.
Why it matters: Google+ might have closed down, but it seems Google isn't giving up on creating a social media platform. The app is now available on an invite only basis, and it should also be noted that this isn't the first social networking app of this style that Google has experimented with. It is also only available in NY, with only a few people targetted in the initial stage. They have pattered with select communities for now to test this app.
After the Shutdown of Google+ in April, Google is once again back to the square one with the Shoelace. It is available as a mobile app iOS and Android devices. We will let you know once the app is available for all. And this name might sound weird but it just an invite-only app which has been developed by Google's in-house incubator named Area 120.
These events - fittingly referred to as "loops" within the app - might include things like playing ping pong at a local bar or watching comedy at an open mic night.
