Cali's wife and children were home at the time of the shooting.

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was run over before he was shot, though investigators were still looking into whether the gunman mowed the mobster down, sources said.

Ten years ago, senior Brooklyn federal court Judge Jack B. Weinstein didn't mince words when he explained why he had hit reputed mobster Francesco (Frank) Cali with the maximum sentence for his role in extorting cash from a trucking firm owner at the former proposed NASCAR site in Bloomfield.

The head of one of the infamous five mob families of NY has been murdered.

The body of former mob boss John Gotti is carried from Papavero Funeral Home in the Queens borough of NY 15 June 2002.

New York Mob boss Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali was taken off the board Wednesday night in a hit reminiscent of an underworld greatest hits package.

Authorities believe Cali, who has kept a low profile in comparison to his predecessors, had ties to the Inzerillo mafia family in Sicily.

The Mafia's notoriety and influence have waned in New York City since then, but there have been flare-ups.

"Franky Boy" Cali, 53, was shot several times and run over by a blue pickup truck in the island's Todt Hill section around 9:15 p.m., according to multiple reports.

An alleged mafia boss has been reportedly been shot and killed outside his home in NY. He was serving a 139-year prison term.

After his release, the feds tried to bar him from meeting with members of the Sicilian Mafia, and demanded that he avoid contact with his uncle, Giovanni Gambino - the nephew of late boss Carlo Gambino, for whom the family was named - except at weddings or holiday celebrations approved in advance.

His murder is the first of a NY mob boss since Paul Castellano was famously assassinated at Sparks Steakhouse in 1985.

Following Castellano's murder, Gotti headed the Gambino family until his incarceration for conspiracy and murder in 1992.

Cali was first reported to be in charge of the Gambino family in 2015.

He was the first NY crime family boss shot in 34 years, according to the station.

Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola of the Bonanno family was shot dead while waiting in his vehicle for an order from a Bronx McDonald's.

Cali's only criminal conviction came from an extortion charge in 2008 for trying to shake down a trucker; he spent 16 months in prison.
