Netflix Goes Against The Stream With Its First Best Picture Oscar Nomination

As the nominees for the 91st annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, Roma star Yalitza Aparicio understandably couldn't hold back her excitement over her Best Actress nod.

Roma and The Favourite led the pack with 10 nominations each.

Rami Malek earned a nomination for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, and will compete against Willem Dafoe in At Eternity's Gate, Christian Bale for Vice, Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born and Viggo Mortensen in Green Book.

It is the tenth foreign language film nominated for best picture. However, it wasn't included in the Best Picture category.

Even the most rosy predictions for Netflix's Oscar chances on nomination morning probably didn't envision a haul quite this abundant.

With one big exception, which Duana will be posting about later, this morning's Oscar nominations are nearly entirely acceptable. Hulu may have only gotten one nomination, but it was the nomination they were hoping for: a Best Documentary Feature for their excellent Minding the Gap. The 25-year-old aspiring preschool teacher was also nominated for a Critics Choice award for the role but had been overlooked by key Oscar precursors the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTAs. That both women got nominated tells me a lot of Academy members actually watched Roma, because Netflix wasn't pushing de Tavira as much as they were Aparicio. This will be a quiet Oscar night for her indeed.

WhatsApp tackles spread of fake news by curbing message forwarding
Just last week, Facebook said it had removed 500 pages and accounts thought to be using and sharing fake news in Eastern Europe. WhatsApp said at the timethe limits would "help keep WhatsApp the way it was created to be: a private messaging app".

The film was produced by streaming giant Netflix, which has come under criticism from its more traditional rivals for its strategy of massive online distribution of original content - and screenings in only a few cinemas.

Netflix also received three nominations for Coen brothers Western anthology comedy "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" including one for best original song. The fifth spot in Supporting Actress was open (after you figure Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Regina King as locks), and it looked to be Foy's, but that nomination did not materialize.

For many pundits, the thousands of voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are at a crossroads: do they go with Cuaron´s auteur masterpiece, or a quality crowd-pleaser that raked in oodles of money? But in a surprise move, Cooper was excluded from the directors' category. "It ticks off enough boxes to make people feel okay about themselves supporting it", she said, referring to the Marvel film´s mainly black cast, black director and boffo box-office numbers.

After directing for decades, Spike Lee received his first best director nomination.

A Star Is Born is expected to top the nominations with its star Lady Gaga considered a lock for a Best Actress nomination. A star is born, indeed.
