Garrett: Crawford Has Lateral Ankle Sprain

Crawford was reportedly diagnosed with a lateral ankle sprain and is expected to be ready for the team's regular season opener against the New York Giants on September 10, according to Drew Davison of the Star-Telegram.

Crawford went down during Tuesday's practice when his right foot became trapped under that of running back Ezekiel Elliott. He appeared to be in excruciating pain and one teammate grabbed his helmet as Crawford lay prone on the field.

That's not to say Crawford isn't going to have a meaningful role or isn't valuable to this team, it's just the realization that his impact is being overstated because there is no Martin- or Jones-level talent on the Cowboys' front right now. He registered 4.5 sacks despite sitting out the final two games of the regular season.

The importance of Crawford to the Dallas defense is the bigger issue here, though.

After a short period in which the medical staff looked at Crawford, the team drills simply moved down the field a few yards before he was carted off the field.

Crawford, 27, missed two games last season, and then all of 2013 because of a torn Achilles' tendon. He signed a five-year, $45 million deal in 2015.
