Air quality in the Klamath River Drainage area deemed unhealthy

MOSES LAKE — You dont need a newspaper reporter to inform you that it is smoky in the Columbia Basin.

The National Weather Service is forecasting northwest winds, which may bring additional smoke into our area from local wildfires that may cause the air quality to deteriorate into the unhealthy range for the Klamath Basin, Chiloquin and Fort Klamath.

Some areas in BC, western Montana, and the western portions of Washington and OR have "unhealthy" air quality today, according to Air Now.

Smoke levels around the Klamath River Drainage area have been classified as unhealthy and unhealthy for sensitive groups and are creating a health hazard, according to the North Coast Unified Air Quality Management District (NCUAQMD).

Air quality on Vancouver Island will be getting worse, before it gets better. People with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory ailments, or who are over 65, have a higher risk of illness from wildfire smoke, the agency said.

The region's air quality alert continues through Saturday.

The state Department of Ecology has deemed the air in East Pierce County to be "very unhealthy" Thursday and the air throughout the rest of the county to be "unhealthy".
