China hits back at Trump criticism over North Korea

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer wants President Trump to take a stand against China for its kids-gloves response to North Korea's nuclear missile activity by using the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to deny all pending requests involving Chinese acquisition of USA companies. "Trump has a strong personality, and he likes tweeting", a Xinhua News Agency commentary explained, "but emotional venting can not guide policy to a resolution of the nuclear issue on the peninsula".

The U.S. leader nevertheless continues to struggle to settle on a posture, going back and forth between praising Beijing and expressing his "disappointment" with the country over its inability to deal with North Korea in a way the White House likes.

It was planned a day after Mr Tillerson said the U.S. was not seeking regime change in North Korea and would be willing to talk to Pyongyang.

The tensions could, it said, "evolve into a localised conflict, or even the outbreak of war, with unthinkable repercussions".

The Trump administration has been pinning its hopes on a resolution to the growing crisis on the Korean Peninsula on China, North Korea's largest benefactor, but so far, China has yet to deter the North Korean regime from testing increasingly-powerful weaponry. As Beijing has said, repeatedly, it does not have the kind of "control" over Pyongyang that the USA president believes it does.

Civil rights advocates who greeted the initial reports with alarm nonetheless remained skeptical about the planned investigation. But Gaertner cautioned that doesn't simply mean giving certain applicants extra points based on their race.

On Monday, Trump expressed confidence the USA would handle the situation. He said Japan and the United States would take steps towards concrete action but did not give details. "We handle everything", Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

China wants both balanced trade with the United States and lasting peace on the Korean peninsula, its official Xinhua news agency added in a commentary.
