The coalition filed a complaint against Harvard University, alleging that the school and other Ivy League institutions had racial quotas that shut out high-scoring Asians. This Department of Justice has not received or issued any directive, memorandum, initiative, or policy related to university admissions in general.
Civil rights advocates who greeted the initial reports with alarm nonetheless remained skeptical about the planned investigation. Some groups assumed the job ad marked a continuation of the Trump administration's shift away from its Democratic predecessor in the areas of gay rights, voting rights and investigations of troubled police departments.
Still, the sudden scrutiny by the Trump administration in affirmative action policies has a number of colleges and civil rights group anxious. To make that happen, he says, the University does recruiting in many different cities and regions here at home, and around the world.
"Anytime a university discriminates on the basis of race it ought to creep people out, and it doesn't make any difference who's being discriminated against on the basis of race, " Clegg said.
Clegg said conservatives were displeased with what they saw as the Obama administration's support for race-based admissions by universities.
"Harvard's admissions process considers each applicant as a whole person, and we review many factors, consistent with the legal standards established by the U.S. Supreme Court", she said. She told the BBC that students of all colours benefited from a more diverse college experience.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, where the freshmen minority enrollment has climbed from 21 percent in 2010 to almost 30 percent in 2016, has made greater efforts to recruit students from high schools in cities such as Springfield and Boston, said James Roche, the school's associate provost of enrollment management.
Nearly 51 percent of students are minorities.
Similarly, top public universities have also become more diverse.

SAT is one of the common entrance exams for college admission.
"You can not place these students into categories and give them boosts based on those categories, " said Gaertner. They stressed that building a campus of students from different races, places, and a variety of experiences was crucial to their academic mission.
