Vermont State Police are investigating after they say a woman's body was found Wednesday night in Middlesex.

Police identified the woman as Cindy Cook, 59, of Barre. Early results suggest her death was a homicide, but the cause of death is pending at this time.

Vermont State Police were called to a secluded area on Brook Road around 6 p.m. Wednesday when a female body was found down an embankment.

Police were also searching for Cook's vehicle and the person who may be driving it.

The investigation is being led by the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit along with detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Washington County State's Attorney's Office and assistance from local law enforcement including the Barre City Police Department.

A phone call that day is the last known contact with Cook, Hall said.

That family member started calling police when she hadn't heard from Cook in several days, Hall said.

Anyone with information regarding Cook's death or suspicious activity in the area of Brook Road in Middlesex should call State Police at 229-9191.

NBC5's Rachel Karcz is at the scene to gather more information. "I think the dog probably smelled something off the side of the road", Hall said during a press update at the Middlesex State Police barracks.
