Some Democratic lawmakers and political operatives have said Pelosi contributed to Democrat Jon Ossoff's loss to Karen Handel in the race for Georgia's 6th Congressional District on Tuesday.

"The issue I think strategically is that Trump energizes their base and Leader Pelosi energizes their base", said Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, who was unsuccessful a year ago in trying to unseat Pelosi. But he said it should send a strong signal to Democrats thinking about taking back the White House.

The minority leader also responded to Republican attack ads in Georgia and elsewhere that targeted her record and her San Francisco district. Democrats are lagging 0-4 in congressional elections this year, having earlier lost races in Kansas and Montana.

Ryan, Pelosi's opponent last fall, said that Pelosi's continued role as the GOP's favorite bogeyman makes it "a heck of a lot harder" for Democrats as they try to notch victories in the GOP-friendly districts they will need to win next year.

Democrats have had four opportunities to pick up seats in the U.S. House of Representatives since Donald Trump became president, and haven't been able to capitalize on any of them. "They vote based on ideas that the candidate has, and we have to speak more to the everyday working class people who look to us for leadership".

Ryan added, "I don't think it's fair". Unless the Democrats start winning more than just moral victories against a deeply unpopular president, her days as party leader could be numbered.

However, even Pelosi's previous supporters are turning their back on the minority's leadership. "Although I will say one thing: Maybe it shows that all the money in the world can't buy an election".

Speaking to CNN Rice said: "I think that people were in shock" after hearing a report from Pelosi and the head of the House campaign arm that Democrats lost, but were doing better in contests in other GOP districts. "That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!"

Their best chance was arguably in Georgia's 6th Congressional District, a suburban one near Atlanta where Donald Trump barely edged out Hillary Clinton past year.

Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, who represents a district near Youngstown, challenged Pelosi for the minority leader post previous year but lost.

Pelosi spoke out Thursday to address calls for her to step down as party leader in the House chamber. And we need a message.

The race for Georgia's 6th district was the most expensive House race in United States history.
