A senator on the Foreign Relations Committee, Chris Murphy, D-Conn., noticed the contradiction between Trump's and Tillerson's remarks, writing on Twitter that this is not how foreign policy is supposed to work.

Russia's state RIA Novosti news agency says the Qatari foreign minister will visit Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart amid a diplomatic crisis between the Gulf nation and other Arab countries.

President Donald Trump called Qatar's Emir on Wednesday (June 7) and offered United States help as efforts grew to resolve a damaging feud between the emirate and its Gulf neighbours.

For its part, Bahrain blamed Qatar's "media incitement, support for armed terrorist activities and funding linked to Iranian groups to carry out sabotage and spreading chaos in Bahrain" for its decision to cut ties.

While Standard & Poor's downgraded Qatar's debt on Wednesday, Moody's Investors Service said the Gulf country's credit quality would decline if tensions with fellow GCC countries continue indefinitely. "There are other countries in the region that grapple with the same issues".

A Qatari official has said an ultimatum issued by Saudi Arabia and its allies for the emirate's citizens to leave is a violation of human rights that requires United Nations intervention. "You can't start mediation when Qatar is in denial and I think right now we are in a phase where Qatar is in denial".

Referring to the conversations that he had with leaders of the Gulf countries, Tillerson said it is clear to him based that the elements of a solution are available.
