With the team at the center of trade rumors-not to mention three days before the draft-the Cavaliers have made a decision to part ways with general manager David Griffin.
Former NBA guard and current ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups is expected to become a candidate for Redden's old job, Wojnarowski reports, and would be the man responsible for hiring a new GM.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are parting ways with General Manager David Griffin, one of the architects of the Wine and Gold's 2016 NBA Championship.
Griffin's contract expires on June 30 and the two sides "mutually decided" that it would not be extended.
Griffin became the Cavaliers' general manager in February 2014 after Chris Grant was sacked, a deal made permanent three months later. It was truly remarkable what Griffin accomplished in his three years as GM, completely overhauling a roster while building Cleveland's first championship team in franchise history. Over the weekend, there were reports that they had discussions with the Pacers about a Paul George trade, which were followed by reports on Monday that they were working on a potential three-team trade to acquire Jimmy Butler from the Bulls.
"It makes no sense why he shouldn't get an extension". Back in April, he told ESPN that the GM should get an extension of the contract, citing his several contributions to improving the Cavs' depth by trading and bringing people in.
A look into the future of the Vegas Golden Knights
Oh? Because only the Philadelphia Flyers are still searching for a starter in net, there wasn't the anticipated run on goalies. They have many, many draft picks, and as much cap space as anyone, and seemingly the go-ahead from the owner to be patient.
Gilbert added that there would be "no announcement at this time related to new leadership of the Cavaliers basketball operations group".
James, on the final year of his contract, immediately sent a thank-you tweet for Griffin with a slight jab at Cavs ownership.
The Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks were among those that reportedly considered Griffin before moving on.
The league and the National Basketball Players Association announced Monday that the Dallas Mavericks star will be a co-captain of Team World along with Charlotte Hornets All-Star Kemba Walker. It's possible Billups could fill that vacancy. In his latest Uninterrupted video, released before Game 4 of the Finals, James said that his mother Gloria and wife Savannah did not want him to return to Cleveland in the summer of 2014.
James in turn lobbied for Gilbert to extend Griffin's contract, to no avail.
