Scalise is still sedated, but he has been awake enough to see and recognize that his family is there with him. He also suffered damage to a number of internal organs, which doctors have declined to discuss in detail.
Medstar doctors reported that Scalise remains in critical condition with more surgeries to come but they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".
Scalise, 51, was in dire condition when he was first shot, but internal bleeding is under control and the prognosis is positive.
As the game progressed, MedStar Washington Hospital Center released an update on Scalise's condition. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.
Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

As they prepared for a bipartisan baseball game Thursday night that promised at least a brief lull in the political mud fight, some said they hoped the good feeling would last past the final inning.
He underwent another surgery on Saturday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the statement adds, and his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.
