United States shoots down pro-regime drone in Syria

The drone, a Shaheed-129, was hit by an F-15E Strike Eagle after it "displayed hostile intent and advanced on coalition forces", the USA military said in a statement.

The U.S. on Sunday shot down a Syrian jet for the first time during the conflict near Raqqa after it dropped bombs near the U.S. -allied Syrian Democratic Forces, which are battling IS.

An armed pro-regime Shaheed-129 UAV "displayed hostile intent and advanced on Coalition forces" at 12:30 am local time on Tuesday, the coalition said in a statement, CNN reported. The Russian Defense Ministry said: "Repeated combat actions by USA aviation under the cover of counter-terrorism against lawful armed forces of a country that is a member of the United Nations are a massive violation of global law and de facto a military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic".

Australia's decision to suspend air operations over Syria comes after a USA fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane, prompting Russian Federation to issue a threat to coalition aircraft.

The shoot down comes two days after the us announced it shot down a Syrian regime fighter jet on Sunday after it dropped bombs near USA -backed Syrian Kurdish forces advancing on ISIS's stronghold of Raqqa.

On June 18, a U.S. jet shot down a Syrian Su-22 fighter-bomber near the city of Tabqa. Compounding the problem, Russian Federation pledged to treat all USA aircraft in Syria west of the Euphrates river as "targets" that would be tracked by their aerial defense systems deployed inside the country.

The competition between the Syrian army and the militias and USA -backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels has stepped up in the Badia desert that stretches to the Iraqi border after Islamic State abandoned large swathes of territory as it defends Raqqa and Deir Zor.

Coalition forces use the area - just northeast of the Jordanian border - as a training and staging area for attacks against IS. The staunch US ally in September said it would widen the scope of targets in the air war against ISIL by allowing its pilots to strike jihadist support and logistics resources in Iraq and Syria.
