House Majority Whip Steve Scalise continues to improve after being shot in the hip during a congressional baseball practice last Wednesday, CBS News reports.

The update Wednesday also said Scalise is "beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation".

The recovery process is ongoing for the victims of last week's shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice, and plenty of people are pitching in to help.

Residents and city officials are determined both to see that the high-profile shooting attack June 14 does not define the community, and to see tonight's Little League games as a milestone in that effort. Rep. Patrick McHenry, a North Carolina Republican who is filling in as whip, is hosting a two-day blood drive, which ends on Thursday.

Among those participating were Vice President Mike Pence and California Rep. Pete Aguilar.

Scalise was the only lawmaker hit during the shooting, but Capitol Hill Police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner, congressional staffer Zachary Barth, and Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika were hit during the ambush attempt.

The Louisiana Republican has undergone several surgeries since he was shot last week.

Scalise is expected to be in the hospital for weeks.
