May faces leadership challenge if she softens Brexit

The plot has been likened to Sir Anthony Meyer's 1989 challenge against Margaret Thatcher.

The Prime Minister is not coming across as either strong or stable - that much mocked mantra of her awful election campaign. All this meant Theresa May had to go with her tail between her legs to the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee and beg for forgiveness; not the action of a leader in control of her party.

Her behavior was branded "inhuman" on social media after a stumbling BBC interview in the wake of the second visit. According to the newspaper, some have threatened a stalking horse scenario whereby a candidate is put up against the prime minister.

Another former minister told the newspaper: "If she weakened on Brexit, the world would fall in. all hell would break loose". In the one of the most prominent signs that she has lost all authority, she was embarrassingly forced to sack her infamous co-chiefs of staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill. "Bear in mind that she was a hell of a lot more popular than the current prime minister".

It was the most ill-judged decision to go the country since Ted Heath asked the voters in 1974 to resolve the question of "who rules Britain" and they replied: "Not you".

Critics have questioned why May failed to meet victims and relatives on her first visit to the Grenfell Tower - in contrast to Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader. The move, which will mean Parliament sitting for a two-year session rather than one, was framed as a way of ensuring Brexit-related laws are passed in time.

Truce collapses in Syria's south amid offensive
Iran is a solid backer of the Syrian regime and has given President Bashar Assad extensive military and political support. This is the first time since its 1980s war with Iraq that Iran has launched a major missile strike outside the country.

Aides to Boris Johnson have dismissed claims he has been discussing a leadership bid with Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon as "completely false" after they were spotted drinking in a pub in Kent on Saturday evening.

As we discussed on this morning's Coffee House Shots podcast, cancelling the 2018 Queen's Speech in favour of a two-year session could be seen as a nakedly political move by May, but ministers are also relieved that it means they can park any hard legislation that does end up on the Queen's Speech vellum until later, when things have settled down.

However, it also removes a critical vote that could have toppled the Government and comes as a crucial support deal with the Democratic Unionist Party has yet to be finalised.

Conservative Brexit minister David Davis is heading to Brussels today to begin talks. At the top of government there are disagreements between the likes of Philip Hammond and Liam Fox. "Preserving the rights of the millions of EU citizens affected by Brexit, securing the achievements of the Good Friday Agreement for Northern Ireland and honouring the financial commitments made by the British government will be indispensable in securing the European Parliament's approval of a potential exit deal". Johnson, the UK's Foreign Secretary, is expected to make public similar comments.

Some 48% of people think Mrs May should remain Prime Minister while 45% want her to resign amid intense scrutiny of her leadership following the Tories' poor election result and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Then of course, is the start of Brexit talks, the Tories' fragile peace holding over the weekend after her chancellor confirmed that there would be no rowing back on the promise to leave the single market and customs union.
