Kicking off with the Victoria Aboriginal Festival last weekend, the recognition of our First Peoples this week continued with National Aboriginal Day on June 21.

With Canada's big bash just around the corner, and today being National Aboriginal Day, it's time for Canadians to reflect on the "current unacceptable relationship that exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples", says Indigenous visionary Roberta Jamieson. While areas dedicated to tourism in the city have many ongoing references to First Nations culture, the overall impact of this special day is still lost on many residents.

The name comes after consultation with the program's steering committee and references the UN Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which Canada adopted in 2016.
