Former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria has been sentenced to a year in prison after admitting to tax fraud. The prosecutor recommends a sentence of 16 months and a fine of almost €800,000 ($890,000).

Di Maria, 29, played for Madrid between 2010 and 2014, when he joined Manchester United.

According to a court document seen by AFP, Di Maria will pay around two million euros to the Spanish authorities after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud committed in 2012 and 2013 when he was a Real Madrid player.

In November past year, Spain's prosecutor's office alleged back of this claim and later the winger admitted the guilt.

The background to this is a concerted attempt by public prosecutors in Spain to target high-earners suspected of tax evasion, with José Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo the most recent to be implicated, although both have denied any wrongdoing.

On Tuesday, Ronaldo was told to appear before a judge for questioning on July 31.

It comes a day after former boss Jose Mourinho was also accused of tax evasion by Spanish prosecutors.

Di Maria's deal is similar to the one struck by Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano, who was convicted of tax fraud last year and given a suspended one-year sentence.

In 2016, Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano received a one-year suspended prison sentence for tax fraud while Barca superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar are both now awaiting court decisions.
