Jeddah - An official source at the Foreign Ministry condemned terrorist attack on worshipers near the Finsbury Park Mosque north of London.

United Kingdom prime minister Theresa May branded it a terrorist attack and said the driver had "targeted the ordinary and the innocent going about their daily lives".

NPR's Frank Langfitt spoke in London to local artist Ferhat Laichour, who says he arrived 10 minutes after the attack and heard the van's driver saying, "Let me kill, let me kill".

The incident at Finsbury Park was the fourth attack on groups of civilians in the U.K.in since March and the third to involve a vehicle deliberately driven at pedestrians. He later died but it is not clear if it was because of the attack.

Later, he assured the employees, "I would just say, if Whole Foods culture evolves, it'll be in ways that you decide". We're proud of our fresh food credentials, with 96 per cent of all our fruit and vegetables sourced from Australia'.

They were ready to beat him senseless but were stopped from doing so by an Imam, later revealed as Mohammed Mahmoud, who intervened to protect the terrorist.

Earlier, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said the incident was "quite clearly an attack on Muslims". Kacimi said when he did so, the driver said to him: "I've done my bit".

Another eyewitness, who gave his name as Athman, told AFP: "While he was in the police van he was waving for victory, he was very happy".

"At this stage in the investigation, it is believed that the suspect acted alone but we are of course investigating all the circumstances leading up to the attack", the statement said.

Mr Mahmoud also spoke about how he told the police to take the suspect.

In an attempt to counter some criticism over the delay in classifying the incident as a terrorist attack, she said: "Officers were in the immediate vicinity as the attack unfolded and responded within one minute".

Others linked the attack to an increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes, particularly since the London Bridge rampage on June 3 that left eight people dead, which was claimed by the Islamic State group.
