Tropical Wave in the Caribbean Has Big Storm Potential

The National Hurricane Center says the storm, which formed Monday afternoon, has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Computer models tasked to tropical systems vary widely until an actual area of low pressure has formed. Tropical, heavy downpours are likely with storms and that could interrupt your outdoor activities and create hazardous driving conditions.

A tropical storm warning was issued for Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and the coast of Venezuela earlier Monday. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue along the Gulf Coast today and tomorrow as the tropical system shifts north and westward with time.

Barbadians are being told to be on their guard and to take the necessary precautions with a developing tropical cyclone due to pass about 200 miles to the south of the island later tonight into early Tuesday morning. Strong shear that has been plaguing the Gulf is projected to weaken somewhat across the central and eastern Gulf over the next day or two.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring "Potential Tropical Cyclone Two" east of the Windward Islands.

The National Weather Service issued an expanded flash flood watch for the area Tuesday, and forecasters say the flooding threat will continue through Thursday night. There will also be a high risk of rip currents.

A broad area of showers is beginning to become more organized in the Western Caribbean Sea and development of this system is likely as the disturbance moves slowly over to the northwest over the Yucatan Peninsula and eventually into the Southern Gulf of Mexico.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for part of the Venezuelan coast, and watches are posted for Bonaire, Curaco and Aruba.
