BJP President Amit Shah declines to comment on Presidential candidates

Sena asks BJP to choose either Mohan Bhagwat or MS Swaminathan else nominate a candidate of their choice for the president's post whereas Amit Shah says that his party is ready for mid-term polls.

A day after the much-talked-about meeting between Amit Shah and Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena on Monday lashed out at the BJP over the emerging situation in Jammu & Kashmir and West Bengal.

On Sunday, Shah went to Thackeray's Bandra home, seeking his support for the NDA's presidential candidate.

Shah defended the approach of his party in meeting opposition leaders over presidential election without proposing a name.

"Once the names have been suggested, we will finalise our name for the post of president", he said.

Sena sources said Mr Shah sought support from the ally for the common presidential candidate.

A day before title-holders India face Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final at London's Oval ground, the BJP chief Amit Shah today said India can not stop playing Pakistan in worldwide tournaments, but made it clear that the two countries will not play each other on Indian or Pakistani soil.

The Congress, the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress are waiting for the BJP to name its candidate. It had backed Congress nominees - Pratibha Patil and Pranab Mukherjee - in the last two presidential elections.

The Shiv Sena today treaded cautiously on the issue of beef ban, saying the "Centre should take states into confidence before arriving at a stand on it". The total value of MP votes of UPA is 10,620.

The president of India is elected by an electoral college consisting of national- and state-level lawmakers. In Maharashtra, Sena has 18 Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs with voting value 14,868.

In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, the BJP has 122 MLAs and claims to have support of some more legislators. The CM looks totally in command in the state and has convinced the BJP leadership about why it is important to keep the Sena in good humour atleast for now. Though it was an important political development, there was no official comment from both the parties on the discussion held between the two top leaders.
