The Syrian jet was shot down on June 18 evening after regime forces engaged members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance battling with USA support against ISIL, in an area close to Raqqa.
The US-led coalition headquarters in Iraq said in a written statement Sunday that a US F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian government SU-22 after it dropped bombs near US partner forces, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Russian Federation has fighter aircraft, air defense weapons and other military assets in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad's government.
Following the pro-Syrian forces attack, the coalition called its Russian counterparts "to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing", according to the statement.
"I don't recall this before, where you have USA forces shooting down a Syrian aircraft".
The new clash comes two months after the US launched a barrage of Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian airbase that had hosted airplanes responsible for a chemical weapons attack in Idlib province.
But the advances have created conflict with the US -led coalition, particularly along the Syrian border, where USA and other foreign forces are training an anti-ISIL force at the Tanf garrison. The U.S. story contradicts that of that Syrian army, which claims the downed jet had been on a mission to fight ISIS militants.
It is the first time in the Syrian conflict that the US-led coalition has shot down a Syrian jet.

"Following the Pro-Syrian forces attack, the coalition contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established "de-confliction line" to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing", said a statement from Operation Inherent Resolve, the US -led coalition fighting ISIS.
In a high-profile incident in May US planes struck Syrian pro-regime forces, which they said threatened US partner forces that were being trained near Tanf in southern Syria.
The Russian threat came just hours after the USA shot down a Syrian regime fighter jet that had dropped bombs on the US -allied Syrian Democratic Forces.
"From now on, in areas where Russian aviation performs combat missions in the skies of Syria, any air-born objects found west of the Euphrates River, including aircraft and unmanned vehicles belonging to the global coalition, tracked by means of Russian land and air anti-aircraft defense, will be considered air targets", a statement from the Russian defense ministry read, according to CNN.

Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the Russian defense and security committee, implied that the Russian defense ministry's actions were a warning.
Sillo also warned that if "the regime continues in its offensive against our positions in Raqqa province, this will force us to retaliate with force".
"I'm sure that because of this neither the US nor anyone else will take any actions to threaten our aircraft", he told the state-owned RIA Novosti news agency. The threat posed by the government plane forced USA naval intelligence to sortie out and shoot down the belligerent aircraft. It said that several hours earlier, regime forces had attacked the SDF in another town near Tabqa, wounding several and driving the SDF from the town. It made the same threat after President Trump ordered a missile attack on a Syrian air base in April.
