Philip Hammond has condemned the Conservative general election strategy, protesting over the way he was sidelined during the disastrous campaign.
"I think what the country needs now is a period of calm while we get on with the job at hand", Mr Hammond replied.
He also said the government "heard a message" in the election that people were "weary" of spending cuts.
Asked whether he would go ahead with £3bn of cuts to local government funding, he replied: "We've set out a series of measures that are already legislated for".
The Chancellor told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show: "My understanding is the cladding in question, this flammable cladding which is banned in Europe and the United States, is also banned here".
The Conservatives' election manifesto included a promise of more spending restraint, including plans to scrap the so-called pensions "triple-lock" after 2020 and severely restrict the winter fuel payment to pensioners. Obviously, we are not deaf.
"Yes, it's true that my role in the election campaign was not the one I would have liked it to be. We didn't talk about the economy as much as we should have done". We heard a message last week in the general election.
"And I understand that people are tired after years of hard work to rebuild the economy from the great crash of 2008-09".
Iranian authorities arrest eight suspects for supporting ISIS attacks
ISIS released a video overnight of the five attackers before the assault, via its Amaq propaganda agency . You know we are crying for people in Syria, it's not that all Iranians are fighting in Syria.
Chancellor Philip Hammond has dismissed speculation that he will push for a soft Brexit by arguing for Britain to remain in the customs union and single market. "And more borrowing which seems to be Jeremy Corbyn's answer is not the solution".
He said: "We have never said we won't raise some taxes".
"We're leaving the EU, and because we're leaving the EU we will be leaving the single market and, by the way, we'll be leaving the customs union", Hammond told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show on 18 June.
"The question is not whether we are leaving the customs union".
"If we had focused on those areas we might have done rather better".
The external cladding blamed for the ferocity and speed of the Grenfell Tower blaze is banned in Britain, the Chancellor has said.
The chancellor, who has been calling for Brexit talks to prioritise the economy, also warned that leaving the European Union without a deal would be "a very, very bad outcome".
Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show Hammond said he had change the fiscal targets of his predecessor George Osborne which created "a lot more flexibility to respond to the situation on the ground.' Adding though that the country still needed to 'live within our means".
