Brexit Secretary David Davis is heading to Brussels for a one-day meeting with its chief negotiator Michel Barnier to start formal negotiations.

Britain's Brexit Minister David Davis said London wanted a deep and special relationship with the European Union after the divorce and that he would conduct the talks in a constructive tone.

Mr Varadkar said: "We spoke about the very important need for both governments to be impartial actors when it comes to Northern Ireland and that we are co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement and that any agreement that may exist between the Conservatives and the DUP should not in any way impact on the Good Friday Agreement".

We now know that at precisely 11:00 BST on Monday morning, nearly exactly a year after the Brexit referendum, the all important exit negotiations will begin.

"If we had a strong signal that she were backsliding I think she would be in major difficulty", the newspaper quoted one unidentified former minister as saying.

Barnier, a former French minister, has voiced impatience in the past that Britain has taken almost a year to open talks.

It certainly is. Mr Davis has said that while the United Kingdom is pulling out of the single market and the customs union and ending the free movement of labour, he wants an agreement that replicates as far as possible Britain's existing trade arrangements with the EU.

British foreign minister Boris Johnson, like Davis a prominent backer of the leave campaign, also sounded an upbeat note.

A key issue he did not mention was the EU's bill for Britain to leave, which Brussels estimates at a colossal 100 billion euros.

The association represents 3,200 businesses with a million employees in Germany making industrial machinery. "We must first tackle the uncertainties caused by Brexit", centering on citizens living on each other's territory, border arrangements between Ireland and the United Kingdom and the amount that Britain stands to pay to get out of its previous European Union commitments, Barnier said.

The Queen's Speech sets out details of extensive UK Government legislation required to put Brexit into effect, expected to include a Great Repeal Bill bringing European Union laws and regulations onto the British statute book, as well as bills on issues including immigration and customs.

"That has always been our first aim and that is what we will do".

We keep hearing that they don't want a 'Norway model, ' they don't want a 'Swiss model, ' they want to leave the customs union, the internal market, they want to limit migration.

A bigger problem may be for British negotiators to resolve what trade relationship they want.

The mood was "incredibly positive" on the first day of Brexit talks between both sides, a British source said.

Today, Barnier will work with Davis to scope out a timetable for the negotiations during a 90-minute session, and then spend two-and-a-half hours in working groups responding to agreements from the principal negotiators. "A deal that supports growth will allow companies to hire more people, raise living standards and improve lives across the country". "We will work all the time with the UK, and never against the UK", Barnier said.

Quoting Winston Churchill, Davis said in response: "A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty". He added: "Brexit won't make anything better, but it will make a lot of things more hard".
