Republican and Democrats faced off in the the Congressional Baseball Game Thursday night, but the spirit of bipartisanship was alive and well following the assassination attempt on some lawmakers.
Game organizers say more than 20,000 tickets have been sold, and more than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity.
Witnesses on scene said it was one step away from a massacre.
"Baseball is the American game, to be able to play it, and that's why we have to play this game tonight", said Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, who injured his ankle in the chaos Wednesday and will watch from the third-base coaching box.
The event held this year at Nationals Park, home of the major league Washington Nationals, was an emotional affair, coming a day after a gunman opened fire at the Republican team practice, wounding four.
Scalise has remained under sedation, although doctors have lightened the medication at times so that the congressman can communicate with relatives.
Republicans and Democrats put aside their differences to root for "Team Scalise" during the Congressional Baseball Game this year.
Ticket sales picked up after Wednesday's shooting, eventually setting an attendance record, the organizers said, as attendees such as Alexander Hilten, 16, of Arlington, Va., made a decision to come to the game for the first time.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear but authorities were zeroing in on the life of James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from IL, in the months and weeks before Wednesday morning's shooting.
President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise Wednesday night at the Washington hospital where he remains in critical condition, didn't attend, but recorded a video message played before the game.
Trump ends his remarks with, "Ladies and gentlemen, let's play ball".
"I'll miss the banter with him back and forth, but I'm sure there's some substitutes over there I can go pick a fight with", Richmond told reporters.
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.
"Since 1909 the Congressional Baseball Game has been the only annual partisan event beloved by all and enjoyed by thousands".
Capitol Police, who provided security for the practice, killed the shooter, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill.
