US Democrats Warn Trump Against Firing Special Counsel Mueller

President Donald Trump has acknowledged that he is under investigation in a probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential race and possible collusion by his campaign - and appeared to assail the Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry.

His comments follow revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey.

Trump, who on Friday confirmed he's being investigated by the Special Counsel, has dismissed the Russian Federation investigation as a "witch hunt". Trump confirmed in a tweet Friday he was under investigation and appeared to take aim at Rosenstein, calling the investigation a "witch hunt".

The former USA attorney for Maryland is understood to have played a key role in President Donald Trump's dismissal of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, with the White House citing a memo in which Rosenstein raised concerns over Comey's performance.

Donald Trump has reportedly been yelling at TV sets in the White House as he becomes "increasingly angry" about an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the United States presidential election. Asked about the prospect and his potential need to recuse during his testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Rosenstein said only, "I am working with career professionals who know these rules and are responsible for enforcing these rules, and I can assure you that we're going to do the right thing, and we're going to defend the integrity of that investigation".

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

"She added that she was "increasingly concerned" Mr Trump will fire both [investigative special counsel] Robert Mueller and Rosenstein".

Barr also called the obstruction investigation "asinine" and warned that the special counsel risks "taking on the look of an entirely political operation to overthrow the president". They have tried to highlight the positive reviews that he received Wednesday when he made a statesman-like appearance in the White House to address the nation after Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot during a congressional baseball practice.

News of Rosenstein's reaction comes amid mounting worries on Capitol Hill that Trump will binge "Apprentice" episodes to fire himself up for a new round of terminations targeting top Justice Department officials.

The president tweeted Friday, "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof". The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

The President's tweet - seeming to confirm the probe based on news reports - came as a surprise to the President's own legal team, according to a person briefed on the matter.

Evidence of that expansion can be seen in orders that have gone out to members of Trump's transition team.

The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

"Mueller is compromised by the close professional - and I would sure think personal - relationship with Comey", said Bill Otis, the former special counsel for President George H.W. Bush.

But Mr Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to end his oversight, given his role in Mr Trump's decision to fire Mr Comey.

Vice President Mike Pence also has retained a private attorney for the Russian Federation probes, according to a Pence spokesman.
