Most Americans think Trump tried to interfere with Russian Federation investigation

As part of his probe into possible obstruction, Mueller has requested interviews with senior intelligence officials about their conversations with Trump, a former senior intelligence official with knowledge of the discussions confirmed to NBC News.

Trump originally said he fired Comey due to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"If he fires Mueller, I will tell you, we are right on the brink of a constitutional crisis", the IL senator said. The tweet was not confirmation that the president or his attorney has been informed by the Department of Justice or Mueller that Trump is the subject of an investigation.

If the report is true and if it is confirmed that Trump obstructed justice by trying to get former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey, and perhaps others, to end the Russian Federation probe, that could lead to the President's impeachment by Congress, something that many Democratic lawmakers say they would pursue if circumstances warrant.

The memo sent Thursday asks for records related to foreign travel, contacts with Russian "officials, agents or nationals" and background investigations into the top Trump associates now targeted by Mueller's probe.

Mr. Sessions' clash with the Democratic senators was the latest chapter in a saga that has dogged President Trump in his first five months as president and distracted from his domestic policy agenda including major health care and tax cut initiatives.

The Justice Department declined to comment on Friday.

President Trump's personal lawyer has retained a Washington, D.C. -based lawyer to represent him in the various government probes connected to Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

The special counsel can only be fired by Rosenstein, though the president could in in theory direct Rosenstein to fire him.

After the firestorm caused by Comey's firing, Rosenstein appointed Mueller, Comey's predecessor as FBI director, to take over the DOJ Russia investigation.
