Scalise and three other people were shot early Wednesday at a park in suburban Washington as they practised for a congressional charity baseball game. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
"While the president would like to attend the game and show his support for all of these courageous public servants, he has been advised that there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols", Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday night. Initially, the most serious complication from a gunshot wound is bleeding, said Dr. Daniel Margulies, director of Acute Care Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, who is not involved in Scalise's care. He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family.
A list with several names of Congress members written on it was reportedly found with the man suspected of opening fire at a GOP baseball practice on Wednesday, according to several reports.
Capitol Police, who provided security for the practice, killed the shooter, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill.
House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told CNN's Jake Tapper on "Erin Burnett OutFront" that despite party affiliation they were both on "Team Scalise" on Thursday.

Sava said that Scalise will require a "period of healing and of rehabilitation", after being released from the hospital.
"I hope he's in good enough shape to watch, because he'll certainly feel good about what he sees", Flake said.
"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", he said.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his backyard with his family".
One of the Capitol Police officers injured in Wednesday's shooting has thrown out the first pitch at the congressional baseball game - to thunderous applause.
"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said of the treatment of Scalise, the No. 3 GOP leader, who is in critical condition at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
