Champions Trophy: Pakistan stun mighty England to reach final

I notice there has been a lot of discussion about the conditions in Cardiff and whether they should have favoured England more than they did.

Cardiff, Jun 15 England captain Eoin Morgan insisted his side would stay true to their attacking style after an eight-wicket Champions Trophy semi-final thrashing by pakistan.

"It is a cause of great pride and happiness for myself and for the entire Pakistan nation", said Sarfraz after the semi-final triumph. "We've played some really good cricket throughout the whole of this summer, and it was frustrating not being able to do it (this time)".

"I don't think we did play anything rash today".

Despite England losing out on the opportunity to win a major ICC competition in front of their home fans, Root believes that his side are capable of going all the way when his country hosts the World Cup in two years' time.

"I think, going into today's game knowing that we were going to play on a used wicket potentially brought Pakistan's game closer to their home", added Morgan. We knew that to get through a semifinal, we had to be somewhere near our best. We elected to bowl and chase again and that worked.

"Finishing third or fourth, I think that's about right where we sit in world cricket at the moment".

Green means go: Garcia looks for another major at US Open
ERIN, Wisconsin, June 16 Masters champion Sergio Garcia said he was happy to be in the hunt at the U.S. Johnson will commence his defence at 2.35pm United Kingdom time in the company of fellow former U.S.

"There were huge expectations they'd go on to win the tournament, I think justifiably so on the back of what they've done over the last year-and-a-half", said Atherton.

Sarfraz is confident about Pakistan's chances in their first Champions Trophy final on Sunday when they will face local rivals India or Bangladesh. "It is just one of those areas where we've got to improve at". It may have been nerves, but mostly "the skill, variety and verve of Pakistan's fast bowlers proved to be too good for England's batsmen, who were confounded by a mixture of reverse-swing, yorkers, bouncers and slower balls".

Joe Root top-scored with 46 and Jonny Bairstow, recalled in place of dropped opener Jason Roy, managed 43 in an innings without a single six.

Bairstow replaced Roy after the Surrey opener had managed just 51 runs in eight one-day global innings so far this season.

"We've been playing fantastically well and it's important that we keep that positivity in our batting, because if we change that, we'll change our chances of getting scores of 400 which we're more than capable of scoring". But it was their batting which failed them on a crucial day as Pakistan romped home.

They collapsed, however, on a sluggish pitch from 20128 in sunny conditions which normally favour batsmen and the bowlers failed to fix the damage as Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali shared a stand of 118 to lead Pakistan to their target.

Both Morgan and the head coach, Trevor Bayliss, led a team meeting after the defeat where they looked to reinforce the progress made since their harrowing World Cup exit to Bangladesh in 2015 to a dressing room still in shock.
