Putin: more US sanctions would be harmful, talk of retaliation premature

Putin dismissed the proposed sanctions, saying they reflected an internal political struggle in the United States, and that Washington's policy of imposing sanctions on Moscow had always been to try to contain Russian Federation.

Known as the Crapo Amendment, after Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, the measure was endorsed by Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) and ranking member Ben Cardin (D-Maryland).

The Senate voted almost unanimously on Thursday for legislation to impose new sanctions on Russian Federation and force President Donald Trump to get Congress' approval before easing any existing sanctions on Russian Federation.

The bipartisan legislation passed overwhelmingly Thursday, 98-2, more than five months after US intelligence agencies determined Moscow had deliberately interfered in the 2016 presidential campaign.

The new Russian Federation sanctions would create a congressional review process if the executive branch eases current sanctions.

However, aides in both the Senate and the House said they expected support for the bill would be strong enough to override a Trump veto if necessary.

The U.S. Senate voted almost unanimously earlier this week for legislation to impose new sanctions on Moscow and force President Donald Trump to get Congress' approval before easing any existing sanctions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that new U.S. sanctions on Russia will damage ties between the two countries.

The US Senate vote for imposing sanctions on Iran was expected, as even during the Obama Administration, a majority of Senate and House of Representatives was against the nuclear deal in total, Cyril Widdershoven, a Middle East geopolitical specialist and energy analyst, a partner at Dutch risk consultancy VEROCY and SVP MEA-Risk, told Trend June 16.

Despite the overwhelming vote, the Russian Federation sanctions package was no sure thing.

"What I wouldn't want to do is close the channels off", Tillerson said.

Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said the bill was an effort for Congress to regain some control of USA foreign policy.

Asked last week about the potential Russian sanctions provisions, Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the administration was "committed to existing sanctions" that were imposed related to Russia's incursions into Ukraine.

If the measure became law, it could complicate relations with some countries in Europe.

The Senate also passed two amendments before approving the bill.

The second reaffirmed "the strategic importance of Article 5" in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the principle that an attack on one North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member is an attack on all members of the alliance.
