GOP Lawmaker Scalise Still Critical Though Doctors `Encouraged'

A Democrat ally of Steve Scalise asked for better protection for himself and his fellow lawmakers a week before the House of Representatives Majority Whip was left fighting for his life after Wednesday's shooting at a Congressional baseball practice.

Physicians said Friday that Scalise, R-La., has stabilized over the last two days following multiple surgeries that became necessary when he was hit in the shooting attack at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., early Tuesday.

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, players on both teams will be wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at that time", said Trump on Scalise's condition.

"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said.

Sava says infection remains a risk, after doctors performed several surgeries to stop bleeding and begin repairing abdominal and bone damage.

Trump spoke during a White House event devoted to what aides called "Apprenticeship and Workforce of Tomorrow initiatives".

Hodgkinson was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with police during the rampage.

The 66-year-old suspect from Belleville, Illinois, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign but whether he was politically motivated is still unclear, investigators said.

Two other victims are also recovering.

A clearer picture of Hodgkinson has emerged since the shooting, a staunch GOP opponent and Bernie Sanders supporter who was very active on social media to display those sentiments.

"I want to take a moment and send our thoughts, love and prayers to Congressman Steve Scalise and his entire family".

Another attendee, Dana Moore, said, "I'm tried of seeing all the division and everything". The joint statement encouraged community members to "continue to support" the game, which will go on as planned Thursday evening.
