Leigh Halfpenny kicked the Lions into a commanding lead before Maro Itoje put the game beyond doubt against the Maoris.
The hosts ran in 12 tries in a dominant display of attacking rugby in their only warm-up match before the three-Test series.
The British and Irish Lions have turned the second-half screws on the Maori All Blacks, emerging 32-10 victors in Rotorua.
And the All Blacks coach immediately cranked up the pressure on Gatland by insisting his opposite number is "running out of time" to flawless his Test match line-up.
The Lions finished the game with 72 per cent of territory and 75 per cent of possession, yet they mustered just two tries - including a penalty try from a 5m scrum.
Yet it would be Itoje that the Lions had to thank in the final minute of the half as he latched onto the ball to win a crucial penalty when the Lions were camped 10 metres off their own line, although there would still be a moment to forget as Murray kicked the ball straight into touch, unaware the new World Rugby laws require him to make the ball live again before kicking it out.
"Good luck to a team that turns the ball over against them", the former Samoa and All Blacks centre said.
"We have said all along that we need to give ourselves the best chance of winning the Test series and that could potentially involve calling up players", Gatland said. Everyone could get excited.
"We're forming new formations and connections". Can't speak more highly of that. But that's professional sport, got to deal with that and move on.
"It's not anything that is a worry for us but you go, "whoah, he is a little bit more anxious than he normally is".
Wales flanker Ross Moriarty was ruled out of the British and Irish Lions tour with a nerve injury on Saturday as coach Warren Gatland called up his first batch of reinforcements. "Every game is a big challenge, which is what we wanted, and this is an experienced Lions team with eight of the starting 15 involved in the last test in Australia in 2013".
The wrong kind of US Open history
Open, though, is taking that to another level. "I'll work on the game a little bit, and I'll be ready to play at the British". Alas, due to his struggles on Thursday when he shot 78, McIlroy finished at 5 over and suffered the same fate as Day .
"We've said all along it's about preparing and learning from the games warming up, but it's all about the Test series....that's what we're here to do".
The Maori ran the ball with less abandon than expected and frequently sought out tactical kicks to the Lions' defensive corners.
"We just didn't capitalise on those first 20 minutes", said Samoa captain Kahn Fotuali'i.
Gatland's post-match press conference was watched by Lions chief executive John Feehan, a sure sign that the head coach had plenty to get off his chest after a hard week on the public relations front in New Zealand.
The Maori All Blacks gave the Lions a warm welcome before kick-off in Rotorua.
"Does it devalue the shirt?"
"I feel becoming a Lion was reward for all the people who have helped me get to this stage in my career and I have really enjoyed the experience".
Tour captain Sam Warburton has been picked on the bench as he struggles to regain full fitness and his best form after a recent knee injury.
This is going to drive people insane.
The tourists' boss came under fire for apparently prioritising geographic proximity over meritocracy when drafting in four Welsh players and two from Scotland, to ease the burden on his squad ahead of the All Blacks Tests.
