Early on Wednesday, witnesses say, a man armed with a rifle opened fire on a group of Republican members of Congress practicing for a baseball game in Alexandria, Va. Sanders also wished a "quick and full recovery" for Representative Scalise, his staff, and the capitol police officers wounded in the shooting. Capitol Police Special Agent David Bailey suffered a minor injury and was treated and released.
The 66-year-old IL man who opened fire early Wednesday on members of Congress practicing for a charity baseball game, raged against President Trump and once singled out House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was wounded in the attack.
"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said in the statement.
Sanders said he was informed that the alleged shooter - identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Ilinois - was a volunteer at his presidential campaign.
"Trump is a Traitor. It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co".
Hodgkinson's Facebook posts were frequently critical of Trump. That post linked to a petition calling for Trump's impeachment "and or legal removal".
The Washington Post found someone who remembered Hodgkinson working on Sanders' campaign.
A number of anti-Trump Facebook posts, taken down Wednesday by the social media giant, were published to the page that appears to be Hodgkinson's just two days before the shooting. That protest was meant to call attention to the power held by the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans.

A search of online newspapers shows that Hodgkinson frequently wrote letters to his local newspaper, the Belleville News-Democrat, which published almost two dozen of them between 2010 and 2012.
"I don't envy the rich", he wrote in another letter.
"There was nothing we could arrest him for", said Watson, "and there was no indication he was mentally ill or going to harm anyone". I know we've got an electoral system that is completely busted.
"This country is in need of a major change in more ways than one, but let's start with the federal income tax rates", said a 2008 letter.
Stephen Brennwald, an Alexandria attorney, also saw Hodgkinson at the YMCA wearing long trousers rather than gym attire, and said he often seemed to be staring into space. Officials said Hodgkinson has been identified as the man who opened fire on Republican lawmakers. "When he did home inspections for me, he didn't rile up the buyers or make ridiculous statements".
Hodgkinson was charged in April 2006 with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle, according to online records in St. Clair County, Ill. Hodgkinson struck Fernandez on the side of his face with the wooden stock of the shotgun and fired off one round as Fernandez ran away. Charges in that case were dismissed.
James Tom Hodgkinson was born and raised in Belleville, Illinois, one of three children.
Schwartzhoff said Hodgkinson's actions do not reflect Sanders supporters. Euille worked out at the local YMCA (next to the baseball field that was the site of the attack) and realized Hodgkinson, who was showering at the Y every morning, was living out of his gym bag.
