Trump described such stories as witch hunt.

Donald Trump has blasted the "phony story" that he is being investigated for obstruction of justice, saying it is "the single greatest witch hunt in American political history".

The president's tweets followed a report in the Washington Post Wednesday that said the special counsel overseeing the probe into Russia's alleged meddling in the USA election is now also looking at whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

But Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller last month, testified Tuesday he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire Mueller.

Former FBI director James Comey, in his testimony last week, quite clearly was laying the factual predicate for a possible obstruction charge - detailing Trump's efforts to persuade Comey to drop the investigation of Michael T. Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, and when that did not work, firing Comey with a false pretextual explanation.

For months President Donald Trump made it known that he's not personally under investigation as part of the probe into possible campaign ties to Russian Federation, but now it appears that could be changing.

Five people briefed on the interview requests, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said that Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers's recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week.

The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, reported on Wednesday that Mueller was investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice.

If that's the case, Trump is saying that law enforcement failed to nail him down on the "phony" Russian Federation story and so is now pursuing the obstruction charge.

Trump's young presidency has been battered by allegations - under investigation both by Congress and the FBI - that Russian Federation interfered to sway the 2016 election in his favor, in possible collusion with Trump's campaign team.

If the investigation Trump calls a witch hunt fails to turn up anything damaging, you can bet he will trumpet yet another "win" of one sort or another. At the time of that report it was not clear that the FBI was investigating Kushner's business dealings.

It's a curious statement to make considering that nine days ago press secretary Sean Spicer said that President Trump's tweets should be considered "official statements." .

A spokesperson for Mueller's team declined to comment on Wednesday.

According to CBS News correspondent Mark Knoller, Sanders told reporters to direct all other Mueller questions to the president's outside attorney, Mark Kasowitz.

Moscow has denied United States intelligence agencies' conclusion that it interfered in last year's election campaign to try to tilt the vote in Trump's favor.

Trump said he fired Comey for poor performance, though he ealso reportedly told a group of Russian officials that the Comey dismissal would help get the Russia probe behind him.

The White House has denied any collusion, and Mr Trump has repeatedly complained about the probe, saying Democrats can not accept his election win.
